Here we go again: Welcome to my new blog! After more than 20 years of blogging in German, Bits of Uninformation is my first attempt at an English-language blog. Amazing, isn’t it?

As is fitting for a first blog post, here are a few words about the author and the blog itself…

The Author

Who’s writing here? I’m Ralf G., a web developer from Karlsruhe in Germany.

I’ve been blogging at uninformation.org (and continue to do so elsewhere on other topics) since the early days of the blogosphere more than 20 years ago (back then known in Germany as “Klein-Bloggersdorf”). But the old blog was shut down at the end of 2024 “for reasons“.

But having a Blog to write something is nice to have. So I needed a new blog! But this time different. A new language. No old content. No redirects from old feeds or pages. A fresh start!

So here we go again: Gazing out into the vastness of the internet, sitting amidst the ruins of the shattered world of blogging and social media. It looks just like the building in the nice image above: somewhat broken, but maybe usable!

The Blog

Bits of Uninformation is meant to be a fresh start. The content will probably be much the same as before in the old german blog: A bit of tech, a bit of opinion, and a few colourful tidbits now and then.

And it will reside on a new domain: I used uninformation.org more or less for almost 20 years, so it was time for something new for a new start. Actually I couldn’t believe that the nice short domain bits.casa was available. Here we go! Given my affinity to Spain and spanish (especially spanish football), it was a perfect match.

Bits of Uninformation was built using Astro. I’m usually more of a “Jekyll guy” because it’s reliable and I am familiar with Ruby. But it’s always nice to try something new. Astro is enjoying a certain amount of “JS hype”, thanks in part to its adoption by the cloud and SaaS industries. Still, it’s a well-designed SSG, and I wanted to try it out on a “real” project.

Uninformation?

I called my blog “uninformation.org“ 20 years ago because back then the old media outlets and their journalists showed a somewhat arrogant attitude towards the Internet and said things like “only publishers’ official websites can provide reliable information, those things in the Internet like blogs are un- or disinformation“. I had a laugh, and the name “uninformation.org“ for my blog was born. Although this blog moved to a new domain, the Uninformation in the blog’s name remains as a small bridge to the past.

Okay, enough with the preamble. Onwards!
